Dr. Rose Acen Upor

University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Dr. Rose A. Upor is the Principal of the College of Humanities, University of Dar es Salaam. She received her B. A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Dar es Salaam and PhD from the University of Georgia, USA.

Dr Upor has held several administrative positions within the University of Dar es Salaam and also at the national level. She worked as the Coordinator, Undergraduate Studies in the College of Arts and Social Sciences and then deputy project manager for the World Bank supported project of Science, Technology and Higher Education (UDSM-STHEP) at the University of Dar es Salaam. She has also worked as the Administrator of the Eastern African Research Innovation and Management Association (EARIMA). The constituencies of EARIMA included several regional universities in the Eastern region of Africa. Thereafter, Dr Upor was appointed the Head of Department, Foreign Languages and Linguistics. Upon completion of her tenure, she was appointed the Director, Office of the Vice Chancellor.  She worked closely with the Head of the institution and his deputies in matters of administration and managing the activities in the highest office on campus. She is a member of the University Senate and its major Committees. In 2015, Dr Upor was appointed the National Coordinator for the Secondary Education Development Program (SEDP) that was implemented by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the President’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government. As the National Coordinator, Dr. Upor was entrusted with overseeing national projects worth over $469 million.  Upon successful completion of the SEDP II project, Dr Upor was appointed the Principal of the College of Humanities. She currently sits as a Councillor in the University Council and represents the Council in several of its committees. She is still a member of the University Senate and its Committees. Dr Upor has convened several Committees at the University of Dar es Salaam that have produced policies, guidelines and, rules and regulations.

She is also a Senior Lecturer of Linguistics in the Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics. Her research interests are in second/foreign language acquisition, specifically applied to Tanzanian learners of English as a Foreign Language. She is a strong advocate of hands-on, inquiry-based learning. She currently lectures courses on Second Language Acquisition and Research Methods in language studies but she has also taught courses in Advanced Phonology and Advanced Syntax. She has also had the opportunity of being an exernal examiner for several Universities. Dr Upor has consulted and coordinated research for various international organizations, government agencies and local government authorities on subjects of language education, school mapping, gender-based violence and transformative education for girls.

Dr Upor has received awards including the outstanding graduate teaching assistant award at the University of Georgia, International Women’s Forum Fellowship award and the Social Sciences award from the Organization for Social Science Research in Eastern and Southern Africa (OSSREA). Dr Upor has also had the opportunity to serve on several committees as chairperson and member. Moreover, she has received leadership training at the Harvard Business School, Boston USA and at INSEAD, France. Dr Upor is experienced in public procurement procedures, public sector finance, accounting standards and audit systems, World bank project management procedures, project planning and project management.

Prof. Novita Dewi

Prof. Novita Dewi, Ph.D.

Novita Dewi teaches at Sanata Dharma University, Indonesia. Among her research grants earned are ASIA Awards (2007), ASF Collaborative Grant (2009); Loyola University of Chicago International Research Project (2012); Erasmus Mundus Staff Mobility Award (2013), and several Indonesian Government Grants (2015, 2016, 2017, 2019). She publishes internationally while contributing to several nationally accredited journals. Her research interests include Postcolonial Literature, Popular Culture, and Language Education.

Dr Neema B Hann

Dr. Neema B. Hann

 Leeds Beckett University, UK

Dr Naeema Hann is Course Leader for the MA in English Language Teaching at Leeds Beckett University, UK and began her career teaching English to Afghan refugees. She then taught and co-ordinated English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and the Institute of Linguists’ Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) in Bradford, UK and trained teachers of English. Naeema has written literacy materials for adult learners for the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (Becta) and accreditation for first language literacy. Naeema’s research interests are language learning materials, learner strategies and motivation for language learning, especially in low-literate contexts.
