Abstract

Needs Analysis (NA) is one of the most crucial steps in conducting an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course. This study aims to analyze the needs of the passenger handling staff of PT. ABC at Yogyakarta International Airport for English. This study adopts a need analysis model proposed by Dudley-Evans and St John (1998) to determine Target Situation Analysis (TSA), Learning Situation Analysis (LSA), Present Situation Analysis (PSA), and Means Analysis (MA). The data were collected through a questionnaire and interviews with the passenger handling staff and by conducting document analysis of their job description guidelines. The results of the study indicate that (1) in TSA, the learning needs are being able to communicate with passengers related to job descriptions from pre-flight to post-flight, (2) in PSA, the staff still lack vocabulary related to job descriptions, have diverse English proficiency level, and have difficulty communicating with passengers, especially from Korea and Japan, (3) in LSA, the staff prefer audio-visual media and they can learn individually, and (4) in MA, not all the participants can participate due to their workload and most of them prefer offline learning.
