Abstract

Objectification of women and nature has long been a concerning issue in various countries, including in Indonesia. In this digital era, literature offers a global platform to place this issue under discussion. This study seeks to investigate the connection of female objectification and water control in the light of eco-feminism which is present in three Javanese folktales: “Sangkuriang”, “Jaka Tarub and the Seven Apsaras” and “The Legend of Banyuwangi River”. Thus, there are two research questions proposed: how is female objectification portrayed in the Javanese folktales (1); and, how is female objectification linked to patriarchal society's control over water in the Javanese folktales (2)? The nature of this study is qualitative and employs textual analysis. The findings of this research discover that the female characters are objectified in regards to their bodily experience; and, the female characters are controlled by the patriarchal system as water-control is identified with male prowess, where women and nature are both seen as objects.
