Abstract
Different levels of digital transformation have been made available through virtual environments. It can be seen through the news articles that are published online nowadays. Through the invention, new words and ways of expressing opinions have also emerged which lead to the developing of language known as word formation. It implies that new words can be produced by condensing existing ones, merging them with other words, adding suffixes to provide grammatical information, etc. To understand the morphological structure and the origin of a word, it is crucial to analyze how words are formed. The aim of this study is to know the types of word formation used on four selected articles about educational concerns in The Jakarta Globe. The data were analyzed using Yule’s theory about word formation. This study adopted a qualitative descriptive method. The result shows that 30 words have word formation process found in selected articles. They are categorized into seven types of word-formation processes namely coinage, borrowing, compounding, clipping, backformation, acronym, and derivation. Compounding becomes the highest type of word formation found in the selected articles with 33%. The word-formation processes can explain how words are formed so that they can be used and contain meaning.
