ANTIDIABETIC EFFECT OF AVICENNIA MARINA FRUIT ETHYL ACETATE FRACTION IN STREPTOZOTOCIN-NICOTINAMIDE-INDUCED RATS

Abstract


Avicennia marina is a mangrove plant that can be used as a treatment for diabetes mellitus. A.marina fruit contains bioactive compounds namely flavonoids, tannins, steroids, saponins, alkaloids, glycosides, and triterpenoids that have antihyperglycaemia potential. This study aims to determine the antihyperglycaemia activity of ethyl acetate fraction of A.marina fruit in streptozotocin-nicotinamide-induced male rats. Rats were divided into 6 groups (n=5) and rats induced using streptozotocin dose of 80 mg/kgBB (i.p) and nicotinamide dose of 120 mg/kgBB (i.p). Ethyl acetate fraction of A. marina fruit was given orally for 10 days at a dose of 30 mg/kgBB, 60 mg/kgBB and 120 mg/kgBB. Glibenclamide 0.63 mg/kgBB was used as a comparison drug. Blood sugar levels and pancreatic GLUT 2 expression were measured. The results showed that the three doses of ethyl acetate fraction of A. marina fruit can reduce blood sugar levels, increase GLUT 2 expression and improve the histopathological pancreas.
