Abstract

Arum manis mango leaves purified extract showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria. Flavonoids and tannis, its active compounds, act as antibacterial that has potential against Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria. The objective of this study find out the antibacterial activity of arum manis mango leaves ethanol extract and purified extract against Lactobacillus acidophilus.

Extract was obtained by maceration with 96% ethanol solvent, followed by purification with liquid-liquid fractionation (n-hexane, ethyl acetate and water). The purified extract is ethyl acetate fraction. The extract was tested for antibacterial activity using the disk diffusion method with concentrations of 6.25%; 12.5%; 25%; 50%; 75%; and 100%. Chlorhexidine 0.2% and DMSO were used as positive and negative controls, respectively. The presence of activity is indicated by the inhibition zone formed around the disk paper, and then its diameter was measured.

The results showed that both types of arum manis mango leaves extracts at all concentrations had antibacterial activity against L. acidophilus bacteria with a radical zone. The diameter of the inhibition zone of ethanol extract and purified extract of arum manis mango leaves was 9.52 - 14.72 mm and 11.28 - 19.27 mm, respectively.
