Abstract

Traditional medicine and herbal supplements continue to play a pivotal role in modern healthcare systems, particularly in culturally rich regions such as Asia. This presentation explores the integration, regulation, and perception of herbal and traditional therapies across Indonesia, China, and the United States. Despite ongoing challenges—such as lack of standardization, limited scientific validation, and regulatory inconsistencies—global demand for natural remedies remains high. In Indonesia, traditional medicine, especially Jamu, is deeply embedded in national identity and public health efforts. The government categorizes traditional medicines into three levels—Jamu, Standardized Herbal Medicine (OHT), and Fitofarmaka—based on scientific evidence and clinical data. China demonstrates a successful integration model, with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) departments in over 85% of hospitals, backed by national guidelines and insurance coverage. In contrast, the U.S. regulates herbal products as dietary supplements under the DSHEA, with growing interest in integrative medicine but limited insurance support. This presentation highlights the challenges (e.g., research infrastructure, public misperception) and opportunities (e.g., wellness tourism, export potential) in advancing traditional medicine as a credible, science-backed healthcare component. Strategic investment in clinical research, regulatory enforcement, and international collaboration is essential for the responsible evolution of herbal and traditional medicine in global healthcare.
