A visual mathematics: across languages and cultures
Last modified: 2024-08-22
Abstract
Visual mathematics is a mathematical exploration that involves the senses and provides students with models and images for concepts, that in turn enhances the learning of mathematics. Hands-on activities are central to educe and nurture students’ logic, observational skills and habit. Visual mathematics may also be useful for communicating mathematical concepts across languages and cultures. We propose a module for visual mathematics in the arithmetical operation of fraction for year 4 students and in learning geometric regular shapes and their perimeters and areas for year 6 students. The construction is not only appealing figuratively, more importantly it maintains precise mathematical constructions.
