Abstract

Engaging in pleasure reading (PR), has been documented as a beneficial activity that contribute to the improvement of  learners’ English proficiency and reading skills. The aims of the current study are two folds: 1) to find out the PR activities that the subject of the study has engaged in before taking the TOEFL ITP test, and (2) to understand why PR engagement has impacted on the good score of structure & written expression and reading comprehension test of TOEFL ITP of the subject of this study. A qualitative case study was employed to understand the investigated case. A young avid reader (age 14) who had got 560 score (58 for structure & written expression; 51 for reading comprehension) of the TOEFL ITP test  was invited to participate in the study. Data were collected through in-depth two interviews, observation, and documents, and then they were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of the study found that the informant has been engaging with PR activities since year 3 (from 2016-present) by reading English fiction, non-fiction books, online and manga books. The extensive reading (ER) program initiated by her school in UK from September 2016 to June, 2018 has also shaped her to engage in further PR or voluntary reading and becomes an avid reader when she returned to Indonesia in July 2018. The PR activities have developed her vocabulary mastery, reading skills, and implicit knowledge which eventually help her to get good score on the section of structure & written expression and reading comprehension test of TOEFL ITP. The result of the study may imply the virtues of long-term PR activities for the good result score of high-stake tests, such as TOEFL, TOEIC or DET.
