Abstract

Social media, such as Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, have been proven to bring positive impacts on EFL students’ academic performance. However, the use of TikTok in language learning has not been explored much. Therefore, this study strove to expose the use of TikTok in learning vocabulary and pronunciation and how TikTok was utilized in autonomous learning from EFL students’ point of view. The data were obtained by survey method using an online questionnaire and an interview as the follow-up to the questionnaire. Forty-six students of the English Language Education Study Program of a private university were involved in this study. The results showed that the use of TikTok was perceived positively by EFL students in terms of ease of use, the pace of learning, learning decisions, learning motivation, and vocabulary and pronunciation mastery. Furthermore, EFL students explored the vocabulary and pronunciation learning materials on TikTok by finding English learning and native speaker content creators. Then, EFL students imitated the pronunciation, jotted down the vocabulary, and found the meaning and the use of the words in context. Thus, the results indicated that TikTok served as the compelling media in vocabulary and pronunciation autonomous learning.
