Abstract
When it comes to global competition, communicating effectively in English is deemed vital to success. If students want to remain relevant in a globalized society, they must broaden their knowledge, sharpen their capacity to recognize cultural differences and increase their willingness to communicate, especially in English, with individuals worldwide. The success in mastering these abilities is related to the role of the students' personality traits (non-cognitive) that affect the success of educational outcomes. The personality traits refer to the Big Five Personality Traits, which consist of openness (being open to new experiences), conscientiousness, extraversion (enthusiasm in socializing), agreeableness (obedience or friendliness), and neuroticism (mental stability and thought). Aiming to find the influence of personality traits (non-cognitive) on English achievement and global competence, this study will involve more or less ten first-year students of a non-English department from one of the universities in Malang who took English courses in the first and second semesters. Qualitative method used by interviewing online to gain information on three scales (motivation to learn English, personality traits (non-cognitive), and global competence). The findings will reveal which dominant personality traits influence female and male students' English achievement and global competence.
