Abstract

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery plays a crucial role in predicting the success of foreign language students. In some EFL contexts, including Indonesian, how EFL teachers facilitate vocabulary learning will affect the students' vocabulary competence. When the vocabulary difficulty scale is considered suitable for EFL students, effective learning may occur smoothly in the classroom. This study investigated selected vocabulary items for eighth graders to learn. The data of this document analysis were collected from an appendix of a bachelor thesis containing a list of 55 vocabulary items in recount texts. The Council of Europe's Common European Framework Reference (CEFR) and Cambridge Online Dictionary were employed as scientific vocabulary level checkers. The findings revealed that 54% of the verbs belonged to A1 and A2 levels, while the other 46% ranged from B1 to C2. Some suggestions will be provided, including substituting B1, B2, C1 and C2 vocabulary items from A1 or A2 level.
