Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the classification of morphemes found in the selected short stories. Morphemes are the smallest unit of grammar that has meaning. In learning morphemes, sometimes learners have some difficulties understanding the word formation such as combining the free morphemes with bound morphemes. For this problem, this paper attempts to analyze the types of morphemes found in the selected short stories and the differences between distributions of the affixes found in the morphemes from the selected short stories. The selected short stories here are titled “The Nightingale and The Red Rose” and “The Wolf and The Kid.” In analyzing the classification of morphemes, this paper applies the descriptive qualitative method. The qualitative method applies to analyze the data and the descriptive is used to describe the finding. The theory that was applied to this paper is two types of morphemes, free morpheme and bound morpheme by Carstairs, A., and McCarthy (2002). This paper finally underlines that the free morpheme and bound morpheme such as derivational and inflectional morphemes exist in both short stories and this paper also found the differences in the distribution of the derivational and inflectional morphemes from both short stories.
