Abstract

Watching movies and series could be a way to improve the language element involuntarily.  Therefore, this research is expected to benefit students who utilize self-learning methods, such as watching Emily in Paris with English subtitles.

There were two questions in this research: (1) What is the perception of ELESP students towards vocabulary learning after watching Emily in Paris on Netflix? (2) How do students experience learning vocabulary after watching a series entitled Emily in Paris on Netflix with English subtitles?

In this study, the research used descriptive qualitative research. This study was conducted with 156 ELESP students from Sanata Dharma University. The researcher collected the data through a questionnaire, an interview, and self-reflection. Following Creswell & Creswell, the researcher analyzed the data in five steps: organize and prepare the data for analysis, read all the data, begin coding all the data, generate a description and themes, and represent the description and themes.

The study showed that most students gave a positive perception of a series entitled Emily in Paris for vocabulary self-learning.  However, some students also said that there were obstacles in using this way of learning: the actors were speaking fast, and the students could not understand certain words.
