Abstract
The purpose of this research was to find out several types of student anxiety and to determine the factors that cause student anxiety in speaking English. This research design was qualitative with phenomenology research approach. The subject of this research was 6 students by using purposive sampling. The research instrument was semi structure interview. In collecting the data, this research asking several questions and record the students answer. This research analyzed the data with some steps such as data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing or verification. The results showed that there were three types of student anxiety in learning English namely state anxiety, trait anxiety, situation anxiety. There are two factors that cause students' anxiety in learning English in class XI Senior High School 3 Jambi City namely the eksternal factors, where students feel lack of preparation, limited vocabulary, grammatical errors, friends and embarrassment. The internal factors, where students feel lack of self confident, shynss, less of motivation and fear of mistakes.
