Abstract

As one of the language productive skills, writing can be a challenging activity for foreign or second language students. This study focused on analysing writing difficulties in a “Creative Writing” subject and elaborating some activities to scaffold the students’ higher order thinking skills in a “Creative Writing” subject. The document analysis on the students’ writing results was conducted to answer the two research focuses. The students writing products covered short stories, flash fictions, and txt stories. The results of the document analysis were supported by the results of a questionnaire given to the students. The findings revealed that the difficulties were found in the strategies of writing the characteristics of the characters in the story, the description of setting, capturing the short moment in the flash fiction, and creating plot in the txt stories. This study also elaborated some strategies to scaffold the student’s higher order thinking skills covering applying, analysing, evaluating, and creating activities in producing short stories, flash fictions, and txt stories.
