Abstract

Many programs have been built to support EFL teachers in assessing their students’ writing because of the development of technology and information today. One of the programs is Grammarly. It is one of the developed Automated Writing Evaluation (AWE) programs in the 21st century that has been claimed as a straightforward tool that can help teachers check their students' composition and provide comprehensive and valuable feedback with a high rate of accuracy and evaluation rate. Thus, considering its strengths, this study examined the assessment of 23 EFL University students' writing by applying Grammarly. The research method used in this study is descriptive qualitative by collecting the students’ texts. The result revealed that students’ writing has some mistakes in four aspects of Grammarly: correctness, clarity, engagement, and delivery. In conclusion, although this program has several weaknesses, such as weaknesses in detecting the type of English and lack of context and content evaluation, it can be used as an alternative way to help EFL teachers to evaluate their students' writing effectively and efficiently
