Abstract

Listening is one of the language skills that is very important for developing other language skills. However, the important role of this skill still gets less attention. In addition, thematic learning done by teachers is still trapped in a learning pattern that focuses too much on the technical aspects rather than the substance. This paper is not about listening learning but about learning that does not consider listening as an important element that determines the effectiveness of learning. This study aims to examine how the classroom atmosphere when listening is not  the learning control center. This study is based on observation of teching and learning in three low-grade elementary schools in Barito Kuala District, South Kalimantan. The results of this study indicate that teachers do not practice the ability to listen to their students. Teachers are more active and dominant in speaking than their students. Students are not trained to listen to each other. As a result, class management is not effective.
