RECYCLED BASED LEARNING MEDIA IN AN ENGLISH CLASSROOM (AN ACTION RESEARCH)

Abstract


This study aimed at improving the students’ vocabulary mastery using recycled based learning media. The study belonged to a Classroom Action Research (CAR) applying the four step procedures i.e. planning, action, observation and reflection. The research was done in July – August 2018 collaboratively between the researcher and the English teacher. There were 27 fourth grade students of an elementary school in Yogyakarta involved as the research subject. The CAR procedures were carried out in two cycles with two meetings each. Test, interview guide, field notes, and observation checklist were utilized as the research instruments. As for the data collecting techniques, it applied test, observation and interview. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively. In addition, it also used quantitative analysis as the backup. The result of research showed that the use of recycled based learning media was able to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. The improvement could be seen from the increase in the mean score between the pre-test and post-test, which increased from 66.1 to 89.8. In addition to the improvement of the students’ vocabulary mastery, the use of recycled based learning media could also improve the students’ learning motivation and interest. In sum, it can be said that the use of recycled based learning media can improve the vocabulary learning process among students of elementary school.
