CRITICAL THINKING PROMOTION IN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH TEXTBOOKS

Abstract


Critical thinking, one of the 21st century skills, requires special attention in its application in EFL teaching and learning, especially its application in learners’ material. This study is intended to discover the extent to which critical thinking activities are promoted in English textbooks used in senior high schools in Indonesia. Mixed method content analysis was chosen as the research method. The data were obtained from various learning tasks provided in two English textbooks used in senior high schools in Indonesia. The findings showed that every topics/target competency in both textbooks are dominated by diverse kinds of students’ tasks promoting their critical thinking. From the data analysis, it evidently revealed that only minor number of activities with no critical thinking. The distribution of the critical thinking activities are also uneven, which made some activities are dominating while the others are stunting. This makes the learners’ critical thinking practice unbalanced and not proportional.
