Abstract

This presentation aims at investigating the logical mechanisms in political jokes of the 2019 Indonesian presidential election campaigns and how the jokes construct intertextual references. Nevertheless, political jokes are produced not only to entertain people, but also to communicate political messages or preferences, which should be scrutinized carefully in order to increase political awareness. Data consisting of 59 memes were collected from online websites and social media. They were analyzed using General Theory of Verbal Humor, which provides an analytical framework to analyze the jokes in the form of memes on the Internet. To elaborate the intertextual references of political jokes, the data are detected, recognized, compared and contrasted, and interpreted within the social and political context. Results showed that the jokes employed seven logical mechanisms, namely faulty reasoning, false analogy, pun, ambiguity, negation, exposing hidden fact and exageration and the jokes were constructed through various connected intertextual references.
