Abstract

Learning English in an English Extension Course as parts of the self-development can run successfully when conducted in a normal situation. The students, who are usually highly motivated, have already obtained a good asset for a successful learning. However, in this solely online context, the learning process put the students in the different situations. This study puts forwards two concerns related to (1) how students responded to the online class and (2) how they exercised their self-directed learning in the online classes in the English Extension Course. The data from online survey triangulated by the documents from the online class were used to obtain the answers. It was found that the students responded differently. The results were related to their feelings and expectations from the online classes. Related to the second focus of the study, the students had various ways of managing their learning in preparations, during, and after the online class. Most of them showed that students managed to proceed to the self-directed learning activities done online, especially in the after class session. The activities ranged from simply discovering new information to selecting resources, guides and information.
