Abstract

The shift from offline to online classroom has presented various challenges for both teachers and students.  Even after being implemented for more than six months during the pandemic, online classroom teaching and learning activities are still perceived as less effective by students. A survey in the writer’s institution revealed that students preferred offline classes over online classes. However as the covid-19 pandemic still lasts, online classes are continuously used in the academic year 2020/2021. To help students build more positive perceptions about the online classes, the writer decided to study students’ perceptions and their preferences of having online classes then accommodated them in the writer’s classes. The writer did the study by surveying 77 students in the English Language Education Department of Pekalongan University. The findings revealed that students had preferences over the teaching platform, materials and evaluation models in their online classes. The students reported that they liked the use of google classrooms combined with WAG and they opted for PPT, Videos and PDFS as the learning materials. They loved tests and individual projects but they disliked daily assignments. They also perceived the lecturers’ patience and engaging delivery of materials as important elements in online classes.
