Abstract

Creative writing is increasingly encouraged in English as a foreign language learning context as it nurtures creativity in using the target language, enhances learners’ language attainment, and empowers learners. Studies have also identified the therapeutic aspect of creative writing. Using documents as the data collection method, this on-going qualitative document study investigates the use of poetry as a space for learners to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. This presentation first addresses the potential of using poetry writing for stimulating students’ expression and creativity amidst the pandemic, then it presents the preliminary finding of the study. Findings suggest students use poetry to reflect on a range of feelings or emotions, namely fear, isolation, grief, and hopefulness. This initial finding also suggests students’ discernments on how they navigated their ways through the pandemic. In this abrupt shift of life and learning mode, learners’ mental wellbeing is of utmost importance, and poetry writing might help them cope with this new kind of life.
