Abstract

The Procedure Text is one of the texts which is studied by students in Junior High School, especially in 7th grade. According to the Indonesian Curriculum, students produce the text after they observe, ask, discussion (discuss), analysis (analyze) , and communicate their ideas or thoughts in the classroom. Based on the observation of the instruction conducted by some teachers in Bali, their communication contained an abuse of gender. Abuse of gender in the language used by teacher-students is very damaging to themselves and their community in the future. It isn’t relevant to the CEDAW conference and Indonesian human rights regulation no No. 35 year 2014. This study examines the abuse of gender (power) in the language interaction held by the teacher-students in procedure text learning at Junior High School in Seririt District, Buleleng Regency, Bali Province. This article describes and explains (1) sexist language by teacher-student interaction in learning, and (2) the teacher-student understanding of sexist language which is produced by their interaction in classrooms. Data was collected by documenting students' text products, observation sheets, and depth interviews with the eight Indonesian teachers and some students. The data was analyzed using Critical Discourse Analysis Theory, especially Fairclough's three-dimensional models and Gender Discourse by Sara Mils. The result of this research shows that there are many Inondesia words or phrases or sentences that were produced by teachers and students during their learning, like anak perempuan harus bisa memasak, ibu cerdas, perempuan ahli masak, etc. Besides that, based on depth interviews with the teachers and students, they weren’t aware or conscious of using those words or phrases or sentences. The teachers hope their students have great competence in producing procedure texts, but they did not aware with abuse of gender in their language.
