Abstract
Today's imagery of professional teachers is marked by certification, that allows them to obtain monthly professional allowance. They follow state-mandated curriculum, complete with a lot of administrative requirements to meet. The students come from sedentary families living in permanent housing, have their footwear on and wear clean uniforms. Such an imagery is absent to Butet Manurung, who has spent years in the Sumatran jungle to serve nomadic tribes. This research paper aims to study the teacher identity development of Butet Manurung in the Jungle School Novel based on the three existing teacher identity theories conjoined by Varghese, Morgan, Johnston, and Johnson (2005) of the social identity theory (Tajfel, 1978), situated learning theory (Lave & Wenger, 1991) and image-text concept (Simon, 1995).
