MONTESSORI-BASED ONLINE LEARNING FOR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS: A CASE STUDY IN UPPER CLASS

Abstract


Elementary School holds a critical role in developing the affective, cognitive, and psychomotor skills of pupils. Nevertheless, Indonesian Elementary Schools are closed due to the Government policies to prevent the outbreak of COVID-19 since March 2020. Hence, teachers and pupils encounter the sudden transition from face-to-face to online learning bringing various of obstacles. This study aims to implement the Montessori-based approaches to succeed the process of online learning for elementary students. Montessori Method nurtures learners’ growth by setting the learning environment and providing opportunity for them to learn based on their interest. 18 students in upper class of Kalyca Montessori School Yogyakarta are examined. This study is qualitative research employing library research, interviews, and observation. The result exposes four Montessori-based approaches in achieving successful online learning as follow: 1) Supporting students’ interest through their daily list, 2) Implementing circle time, 3) Providing individual learning chamber, 4) Revealing student’s feelings through their daily journal.
