INVESTIGATING THE USE OF MIND MAPPING STRATEGY TO ENHANCE EIGHTH GRADERS’ EFL WRITING SKILL

Abstract


Writing skill is an integrated part of EFL learning process. However, the eighth graders at a Junior High School in South Jakarta found it difficult. Mind mapping was discovered as a strategy to help them. This paper aimed at examining the effectiveness of mind mapping strategy to enhance students’ writing skill. There were a pre-test and post-tests distributed to 29 eighth graders.  Each student created a mind map, then developed it into a recount text; followed by responding to a questionnaire and an interview. The minimum score was equivalent to 70, whereas the average score of initial data from the pre-test was 51. After the treatments, the score in cycle 1 reached 70,5; while in cycle 2, it increased to 85,5. These indicated that the utilization of the mind mapping strategy was effective in enhancing students’ writing skill. Besides, the implemented strategy was interesting and fun as well.
