Abstract

The workplace communication landscape has undergone significant transformation due to advancements in communication technology, particularly with the remarkable influence of WhatsApp in recent times. This study employed Teun A. van Dijk's Discourse-Structures Approach to investigate the intricate interplay between discourse, power dynamics, and social hegemony within a contemporary workplace context. Focusing on a WhatsApp group used by employees of a university’s language learning and research center, it analyzed how linguistic choices, narrative structures, and social cognition contribute to the construction and reinforcement of social hierarchies. By examining both the text and the social context, the study tried to reveal the discursive strategies through which dominant ideologies are negotiated and upheld. The findings shed light on the complex ways in which workplace communication on digital platforms reflects and shapes power relations, ultimately enriching our understanding of communication dynamics in modern organizational settings.
