Symbolic meaning is the meaning that is conveyed by a symbol. A symbol is something that represents something else rather than its natural meaning. For example, a dove is a symbol of peace. This paper looks at the biblical symbolic means of the word “water” in the Gospel of John. It employed qualitative methods to examine the narratives that involve the word water in this Gospel. The word water total appears 23 times in John’s Gospel. The symbols of water in this Gospel are rich and complex. This research discussed water as a symbol of the Spirit, rebirth, new life, and some other spiritual meanings. This research is a documentary analysis. The paper would benefit the readers who are interested in the symbolism of water in the Gospel of John, or for believers of Jesus who want to learn more about the meaning of water in the Gospel.
