The Utilization of Code-Switching in Indonesian Songs

Abstract


People in multilingual communities across the world periodically switch from a single language to a different one to meet their communication needs. This is known as code-switching. People utilize code-switching from day-to-day basis and one of its implementations can be observed in the field of music. This study would be conducted to examine the use of code-switching languages found in Indonesian Songs. This current study employs the document analysis technique. The qualitative descriptive approach is used by the researcher to clarify its work. As a result, the procedure will be utilized to transcribe the data acquired by the researcher, and then the analyzing phase will be commenced. The finding of the investigation showed that the selected 20 Indonesian Songs are using intra-sentential and inter-sentential code switching. Primarily, the utilization of code-switching in the songs is to express a certain emotion in which is unable to describe using the native language.
