PARTICIPANTS' PERCEPTIONS OF TUTORS’ TEACHING METHODS IN THE GRAMMAR TUTORING PROGRAM: A PRELIMINARY STUDY

Abstract


Grammar is one of the biggest challenges EFL students face. To overcome this challenge, ELESP offer grammar tutoring program for all semester one students.  Providing organized grammar tutoring by defining suitable teaching methods is one of the possible ways to help tutees understand grammar concepts. This study aims to investigate tutees’ perceptions of the tutors’ teaching methods and how the tutoring program helps students achieve their learning goals. This study employs quantitative research as the inquiry method. Questionnaires will be distributed to grammar tutoring program participants in four classes. Then, the researchers will observe four tutoring classes and conduct interviews with 8 participants who represent each class.  This preliminary study showed even though students generally considered the program helpful, some tutees feel that the grammar tutoring program at ELESP Sanata Dharma University ran ineffectively in some aspects, such as the tutor’s unprepared materials and unclear explanations during the tutoring class.
