Abstract

Jawa Timur Park Group's development of modern amusement parks in Batu City has profoundly affected various sectors. This study attempts to investigate how the signs of Jawa Timur Park Group influence Batu's image as a tourist destination. To reach this objective, the researcher applies two theoretical frameworks to examine the signs: Landry and Bourhis's (1997) the signs' symbolic functions of Linguistic Landscape theory and Cheong's (2004) Generic Structural Potential theory of printed advertisements. A total of 53 signs were analyzed through a qualitative methodology, with the appearances, language used, and symbolic purposes being analyzed as the focuses. The findings demonstrate how each type was able to convey the information despite having distinct patterns. Three symbolic functions were identified: signs represent JTPGroup as a local entity but a global player; signs represent a lively environment; and signs represent a powerful exposure that contributed to the development of Batu's reputation as a tourism city.
