A STUDY OF STUDENTS’ ANXIETY IN SPEAKING CLASSROOM PERFORMANCE AND FACTORS CAUSING IT

Abstract


The objectives of this study are to find out the kinds of anxiety experienced by the students in speaking English language and the factors which cause the students’ anxiety in English speaking classroom performance. The sample of this research is 50 students of English Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Languages, Arts, and Cultures, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta taken by using random sampling. The instruments of collecting data are interview and questionnaire. The results show that there are 91% of the students who experienced the anxiety of test, 89% of the students felt anxious in communicative apprehension, and 100% of them were getting anxious in fear of negative evaluation. Based on the results, the kinds of students’ anxiety are State Anxiety and Trait Anxiety. The factors of students’ anxiety in speaking English language are categorized into three major types of anxiety, namely test anxiety, communicative apprehension, and fear of negative evaluation.
