An Analysis of Figurative Language in Short Story “A Dead Woman’s Secret” by Guy de Maupassant

Abstract


Figurative language helps us to better understand and appreciate literature and helps us to improve our writing. The study's objective is to describe types of figurative language and identify the contextual meaning of figurative language. A descriptive qualitative methodology was used to analyze the figurative language in “A Dead Woman’s Secret”, a short non-fiction story. This research used the theory from Perrine According to Mentari (2023), there are Simile, Metaphor, Metonymy, Apostrophe, Synecdoche, Hyperbole, Symbol, Allegory, Irony, Paradox, Personification, and Understatement. The results of this study revealed that 50 data contained figurative language. The researcher found 7 kinds of figurative language: simile, metaphor, personification, apostrophe, metonymy, hyperbole, and irony. In this research, metaphor is the dominant type of figurative language found in “A Dead Woman’s Secret” non-fiction short story.
