SYMBOLISM IN VILLANELLE (DO NOT GO GENTLE INTO THAT GOOD NIGHT AND ONE ART)

Abstract


Symbolism is a literary device frequently utilized in novels, poetry, and short stories. the use of symbols to convey information to the reader through the use of connotative language. This research analyzed the symbolism in the poems "One Art" by Elizabeth Bishop and "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night" by Dylan Thomas. Both of these poems had some symbolism. The symbolism of both poems was examined in this study using qualitative methods and a narrative model to analyze the data. The findings indicate a certain degree of criticism shared by the two studied poems. The term "loss" is used in these poems in a variety of ways.  Second, these poems share a common type of poetry called a villanelle. Thirdly, there are 10 symbolisms in "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night" and 9 in "One Art" in terms of symbolism seen in both poems.
