Abstract

This article offers hybridity as a locus for public theology in Indonesia. For so long, the theological answer for Indonesia’s diverse population has revolved around similarity and contextuality. The problem with this approach is that both answers has their own problem. The former endangers itself to neglect the marginalized due to its inherent tendency towards the status quo, whereas the latter entails a weakness that is too linear in its methodology. Therefore, this article argues that by using hybridity as a locus for public theology in Indonesia, we can maintain the particularity of every Indonesian individual, while also acknowledging that Indonesia’s diversity cannot abandon its spirit of nationality. This article will first explore finding similarity and contextuality and why both are problematic. Then, it will look into the notion of hybridity and the reason for its usefulness theologically in facing diversity. Lastly, it will present how hybridity can be of use to the theological milieu in the Indonesian public sphere.
