A Literature Study on How Religion Influences Culture and Vice Versa in East Nusa Tenggara and West Papua
Last modified: 2023-05-16
Abstract
Eastern Indonesia has a very diverse and deep-rooted culture. Although culture does need to be respected, it does not cover the fact that there are cultural practices that marginalize certain groups. This research will only focus on East Nusa Tenggara and West Papua cultural practices. In East Nusa Tenggara, there is a practice of stratification, where the ata is placed in a lower position. In West Papua, there are still patriarchal practices that are certainly not beneficial for women. So, what is the role of religion in influencing these cultures? This study uses literature by collecting books, previous research, and latest news. The results of this study show that Catholic and Protestant are religions that are adhered to by the majority of the people. Religion has a role in overcoming some problems, for example, dealing with "simpler" conflicts. However, religion has not been fully able to influence changes in more positive cultural practices. For example, in East Nusa Tenggara, some people have embraced Christianity but still practice stratification. In West Papua, the inclusion of the Bible has indeed given society a new perspective on gender equality. However, until now, patriarchal practices still persisted. Whereas, religion explains that all humans are the same; moreover, humans should love their neighbors. So, what is the next step for religious institutions?
