Abstract

Marc H. Ellis (born 1952) is a Professor Emeritus of Jewish Studies who developed a Liberation Theology to respond to the Israeli-Palestinian issue with inspiration from the Bible. Influenced by Latin American Liberation Theology, particularly that of Gustavo GutiƩrrez, which emphasises solidarity and resistance to systems of oppression, Ellis developed a theology aimed at resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. With regard to his Liberation Theology, Ellis highlights the importance of the exodus in the Jewish tradition as a foundation, while linking it to the experience of the Holocaust. In this regard, Ellis emphasises that the Holocaust experienced by Jews cannot be used as a justification to support the policies of the state of Israel towards Palestinians. He criticises the oppression inflicted on the Palestinians and calls on Israel to acknowledge its sins against the Palestinians. Ellis himself views that siding with the Palestinians is a moral necessity.

His main thoughts include two important points: (1) emphasis on justice and humanity in dealing with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and (2) theological reflection through sound prophetic in promoting liberation. Ellis stated that the Jewish prophetic voice must lead to justice, truth and concern for other parties. Here, Ellis encourage all parties not to be apathetic and to be actively involved in the use fighting against injustice and suffering. Ellis's thoughts and work reflect Jewish theological tradition, although he is considered more of an independent and innovative thinker that explores interdisciplinary boundaries. It's understandable if he gets his views challenges, especially from Jewish community leaders and most academics in the US who afraid of change and want to inflame the spirit of triumphalism.

The relevance of Ellis' theology can be seen in his invitation to dare to face unpleasant truths and move constructively in the tension. The Liberation Theology he developed boils down to efforts to engage in the struggle for human rights, social solidarity, and reconciliation. Ellis' theological thinking is important not only for the Israeli-Palestinian context that continues to be plagued by prolonged conflict today, but also for the context of Indonesia as a pluralistic country in various fields. Ellis inspires the Church to involve itself in efforts to answer the challenges of injustice experienced by all parties, regardless of differences in political, social, economic, cultural and religious backgrounds. Finally, it can be said that Ellis' Liberation Theology does not stop as a conceptual reflection, but a call for concrete praxis in addressing global injustice.
