Towards a Cosmopolis Community: Navigating Multicultural Challenges in the Indonesian Church
Last modified: 2024-02-27
Abstract
Multiculturalism has always been an integral part of Indonesia since time immemorial. This reality implies that Indonesia is characterized by a multitude of differences, including culture, religion, customs, tribes, and so forth. Following guidance from the Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences (FABC), the Indonesian Church aspires to be contextual and responsive to various local issues. The objective is clear: it aims to be an Indonesian Church, not just a Church in Indonesia. In this regard, the Indonesian Church must engage in dialogue with cultural diversity, religious diversity, and poverty. Historically, accomplishing that has not been easy. In order to accomplish this mission, Bernard Lonergan's concept of cosmopolis could offer a significant benefits. Indonesia Church should strive to become a cosmopolis community. Lonergan defines cosmopolis as a cultural attitude that promotes interior liberation through a dialectic toward authenticity. The transcendental character of cosmopolis helps Indonesian Church to go beyond the boundaries of any given context in Indonesia. Viewing the Indonesian Church as a cosmopolis community implies that dialogue with diversity can occur organically, without coercion. The Indonesian Church must operationalize timely and fruitful ideas that may otherwise remain dormant. It should also prevent dominant groups from deceiving humanity through the rationalization of their sins. Lastly, the Indonesian Church should assume responsibility for shaping a secure future. This concept aligns with the imperative for the Indonesian Church to be contextual.
