Abstract

This research investigates the concept of the ‘communion of saints’ found in the Nicene Creed and how it relates to Catholic pilgrims' experiences of devotion to ‘Mary, Mother of the Progo River’ at the shrine of Mary Queen of Peace in Jatiningsih, Yogyakarta, today.  There is a surplus of meaning when the Nicene Creed's ‘communion of saints’ section is applied to the Indonesian context.  The Nicene Creed states that the Church's saints are all members of the same communion. Catholics' devotion to ‘Mother Mary whose love flows like the Progo River’ connects the Catholic Church's portrayal of Mother Mary with local holy figures who hold a particular place in the lives of the locals who inhabit near the Jatiningsih Mary Queen of Peace shrine.  How do Catholics in the area practice their devotion to ‘Mother Mary, whose love flows like the Progo River’? The primary theoretical framework of this study is the inculturation of faith, which examines the interaction between local cultures and the Catholic faith, from Pope Francis's perspective. Catholics in the area acknowledge that these legendary characters have a spiritual life.  The locals now regard them as ‘holy,’ or at the very least, ‘mythical.’  According to in-depth interviews conducted with research validators and informants, the absence of communion between the Virgin Mary and local holy figures is frequently seen in the research area. Local mythical figures are often seen contending with the venerated figure of the Virgin Mary rather than communion. This pilot project aims to encourage the inculturation of sustained faith.
