Abstract
This paper discusses the challenges faced by senior high school students in some remote areas during the COVID-19 pandemic. It reports data from an original qualitative study to investigate learning experiences concerning an aspect of their learning practice: how effectively video conferencing helps learners to develop their English skills. A population of 15 senior high school students enrolls at three schools in remote areas (Sumatra, Jogjakarta, and Kalimantan). Rely on qualitative data analysis from written responses and semi-structured interviews. By providing concrete examples, those participants offer insight into challenges during the online class. Our findings show these SHS students main challenges in following video conferencing of online courses are the unsteady networks and exposure to more distractions. The findings bring forward the picture of fully online learning conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic on SHS settings in remote areas in Indonesia.
