PROBLEMATIC ENGLISH CONSONANT SOUNDS FOR INDONESIAN EFL LEARNERS

Abstract


Consonant is a group of letters of the alphabet that produces speech sounds by blocking the breath in the vocal tract. In English there are 24 consonant sounds. However, many learners do not know about English consonant sounds so that they are still having difficulty pronouncing some of the words with the consonants /θ/, /dʒ/, /Ʒ/, /tʃ/, /ʃ/, and sometimes still affected by their first language style. The aim of this research is to analyze the difficulty of English consonant pronunciation for Indonesian learners and give tips to pronounce difficult word so that their speaking skill will be better. Survey and observation are carried out to obtain the result with the target of learners with many different school level and public. The approach of this study is quantitative. The result expected that there will be many mistakes found so that any new suggestions can be provided to help improving Indonesian speaking skill.
