Abstract

Ambiguity is a word or expression that can be understood in two or more ways. There are two basic types of ambiguity, namely lexical ambiguity and structural ambiguity. In this paper, the focus is on structural ambiguity. Structural ambiguity is a type of ambiguity that can be found in a clause, phrase or sentence that has two or more different interpretations as the result. In some news headlines, we can find structural ambiguity such as in The Jakarta Post and New York Times. The research objective is to identify the structural ambiguities contained in the news headlines. The method used in this research is a descriptive method. This paper describes a phenomenon based on the observations of the authors. The conclusion of this research is that the writing of the news headline must be clear, it should not contain ambiguous phrases, clauses, or sentences because if it is ambiguous the reader will be confused and have a different interpretation from the news that is being read.
