Abstract

Abstract: The role of language learning strategies and language learning motivation has long been argued to affect English proficiency. Studies about this topic have been diverse in findings (Nasihah & Cahyono, 2017; Rahman & Maaarof, 2015; Zhang & Xiao, 2006). Referring to previous studies, this study aims at examining how Indonesian EFL language learning strategies and motivation are related to their proficiency.  The Strategy Inventory in Language Learning or SILL (Oxford, 1990), The Language Learning Motivation Questionnaire or LLMQ (Schmidt et al., 1996) instruments are employed in this study. Indonesian EFL learners at tertiary education level participate in this study. Students English proficiency is assessed based on self-rated English proficiency. The study demonstrates that language learning strategies and motivation are important aspects in English proficiency. It is advised that language learning strategies and language learning motivation should be introduced to English classroom so that students are aware of their roles in boosting English language learning.
