Abstract

Many literatures often portray and place female characters in difficult situations or complicated life. Female characters are often portrayed as being weak, cowardly, and easy to give up to their faith. Moreover, the patriarchal values that exists in the society brings the stigma that women should be obedient, humble, and gentle because of the necessity of social norm and how the culture brings limitations toward specific behaviours and changes on women. The purpose of this paper is to get the idea on how women are represented on Private Lives. Could women as human being cross the line and define themselves for what they want to be in the first place? The researcher will use liberal feminist theory to find out the representation of women characters on the written play. This research reveals women can be a property owner, being rich, defined as free human being, educated individual, and citizens who get equal rights. These findings show that female characters on Private Lives have their own freedom as their fundamental rights which they do aware of it. Therefore, this study is conducted to help people understand more about gender biases and perspectives toward women.
