Abstract

Career in teaching is considered as a profession that involves tutoring students academically at a range of education levels. Investigating and exploring the initial motivation of pre-service English teachers are the objectives of this study. Previous studies were predominantly conducted in urban areas where extrinsic motivations were found to be dominant. This study fills the gap by being carried out in a remote area which has not been explored before; providing a unique perspective on the motivations of pre-service English teachers in such contexts. The research involved pre-service English teachers for the 2022 academic year. These participants were selected using purposive sampling by respecting their experience in the college and considering that they have not their Practice Teaching yet. A questionnaire was given to 68 pre-service teachers and a semi-structured interview was utilized to 10 of them to gather detailed, accurate, and rich data. Once the data were collected, the analysis was conducted within three steps: data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The result of this study shows that the motivations of pre-service teachers are viewed in three motives: intrinsic, extrinsic, and altruistic, where extrinsic motives were found to be ominous based on lecturers and students observation. Keywords: career motivation, pre-service teacher, remote area
