Abstract

One of many challenges live by faith in modern era is subjectivism and individualism. In fact, both of them not only become live by faith challenge but also a challenge how to live together for seeking common good. Subjectivism imprisons people in their own thought, feelings and desires that make oneself always feel right and oftentimes enforcing their ideas or their life styles to others. Meanwhile, individualism makes people selfish, unconcerned and feel not need others nor God. Pope Francis connects subjectivism and individualism into two ancient heresies, gnostisism and pelagianism. Using the library research, by analyzing ancient manuscripts on gnostisism and pelagianism, as well the Apostolic Letters and Encyclic of Pope Francis, resulting indications that neo-gnostisism and neo-pelagianism affect the way of thinking, life styles and even faith. Almost in every exhortation and encyclical letter written by Francis since he was elected Pope in 2013, he always discussed and criticized these two matters and name them as the poison of spiritual worldliness and the enemy of holiness. From his last Apostolic Letter, Desiderio Dedideravi, Pope Francis emphasizing liturgy, which essentially a communal celebration, is the most effective antidote for worldliness and shield from the enemies of holiness.
