Abstract

Ugamo Malim is a local belief of the Batak Toba tribe in Indonesia. However, the Ugamo Malim community, known as Punguan Parmalin, does not only exist in Sumatra Island, but also in other places, such as in Tangerang, Banten. Using literature study and interview methods, this research focuses on exploring and discovering the concept of divinity of Ugamo Malim belief, as it is believed by the Parmalim community in Tangerang. The results show that the Ugamo Malim belief is a special heritage given by Debata Mulajadi Nabolon to the Batak Toba tribe. They believe in Debata Mulajadi Nabolon as a divine person who is highly respected and has important roles for the believers of Ugamo Malim. They maintain their relationships with Debata Mulajadi Nabolon and other human beings by living out the fundamental teachings, the rules of social interaction, and various worship rituals. Despite experiencing several challenges arising from the developments of times and other religious or believer communities, Ugamo Malim can still maintain their existence to carry out their teachings and worship rituals faithfully. Their existence strengthens the diversity in unity of Indonesia as a God-fearing nation.
