Abstract


The emergence of google translate makes easier for the translation process especially for English students who are supposed to use English in lecture activities. However, unfortunately their language skills or linguistic competence still vague based on the phenomenon found by previous researcher towards ELESP students’ attitude on google translate. Therefore, this research aims to investigate students' linguistic competence and performance focusing on translation and also figure out how much their linguistic competence and performance significantly influence their translation. In need of analysis, the researcher used a quantitative approach and interpreted the scores result by number and explanation. The participants were 53 students of ELESP students that have taken translation courses. The instrument used to collect the data is a test. The findings showed that 39.7% were classified as good, 49% fairly good, 7.6% fair and 3.8% poor on the linguistic competence test. Meanwhile, in the translation task (51%) it is classified as excellent, (35.8%) good, (13.2%) poor. In addition, it is also found that 25,8 % students’ ability to translate influenced by linguistic competence. Besides, the correlation coefficient between linguistic competence and students’ translation work is positive.
